Motor racing might be as big a part of this country’s heritage as Big Ben or fish and chips, but that may not be enough to save it from the glare of the environmental lobby.
In reality, the few cars taking to the tracks each season probably create less CO2 than the hoards of fans travelling to Premier League football matches. But complacency is not on the agenda in motor racing’s corridors of power, and moves are afoot to ensure the lid is kept on CO2 emissions in at least one branch of the sport.
From 2009, competitors in the HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship will need to prove that their cars produce no more CO2 than the road cars on which they are based, or face a ban.
