The Centre for Defence Enterprise (CDE) is based at the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus and is part of the Defence, Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL). CDE acts as the first point of contact for anyone wishing to submit a research idea that may have a defence application. Since launching 3 years ago, it has handled more than 2,000 proposals of which 10% have been approved for funding at a total value in excess of £14m.
CDE emphasises that its main focus in on innovation and attracting suppliers from non-traditional areas, in particular SMEs and other innovators. CDE is trying to overcome the fact that some of these potential suppliers will be put off by the apparent costs of entering a new market and the unfortunate bureaucratic image of traditional defence procurement.
It provides a rapid response to anyone with an innovative idea, supporting them with a range of advice, assistance and potentially, a good level of research funding. CDE welcomes all ideas, regardless of how unusual or outrageous they may first appear.
CDE is the gateway for the Ministry of Defence for ideas and innovation from UK industry, to ensure our armed forces are best equipped now and in the future.
