The 1.5-mile oval, built by Bruton Smith and Curtis Turner in 1959, was the first sports facility in America to offer living accommodation for fans, with 40 condominiums overlooking Turn One completed in 1984 and a further 12 being added in 1991. It was the first major speedway to run races under floodlights and now unveils its latest fan friendly innovation between Turns Two and Three.
The enormous screen – said to be the largest HD screen in the world - has 158 panels of nine million bulbs, within a steel frame 100 ft high, and will weigh over 300 tons, and will be ready for the famous NASCAR All Stars race on May 21st when the MIA business group are ‘in town’ for their annual visit.
"Our fans are going to love it," said speedway president Marcus Smith. "They're going to have a great time, and will not believe how exciting the racing will be when they can watch it both in front of them on the track and catch all the action on the television screen. It's literally the biggest “Fans First” initiative in our history."
