The package of measures worth £151.5 million will be used by government to support targeted strategies for key sectors and markets. The main bulk of the package is aimed at the aerospace sector and high-technology industries.
BIS announced that funding under the Technology Strategy Board’s High Value Manufacturing competition will be increased by £5 million in addition to £24 million invested earlier in the year, which includes automotive projects. Additionally a further £4 million will be given to the Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS), on top of £4 million announced as part of the Low Carbon Industrial Strategy.
BIS also indicated it would launch its Manufacturing Insight initiative in the autumn, which aims to improve the public perception of the UK manufacturing sector and promote careers in manufacturing to young people.
Business secretary Lord Mandelson said: “This practical package of measures will help equip British manufacturers, of all sizes and sectors, to take advantage of the advanced technologies and new market opportunities now shaping our low carbon industrial future.”
