This workshop will look at specific challenges in the protection of sports trade marks as well as to commercial aspects of brand development and exploitation in the sports industry.

3.05pm Protection and enforcement of sports trade marks - Chris Duffy and Adam Lovatt, IMG
Chris is a Scottish qualified solicitor in the sports division of IMG with responsibility for Events and Federations and Tennis divisions. Adam specialises in sports law and his work focusses on the Licensing and Consulting divisions of IMG. Both Chris and Adam have extensive experience in licensing and commercial IP issues involving sports organisations as well as sportsmen. Chris and Adam will draw on their experience of situations arising in the protection and enforcement of trade marks for sporting events and individual sportsmen in a range of different sports and will bring examples and practical tips.
3.50 pm The commercial perspective – Commercialisation strategies for sports brands - David Dellea, PwC Consulting (Zurich)
A Swiss lawyer by background, David Dellea is Head of Sports Marketing at PwC Consulting in Zurich and a founder of PwC’s Sports Mega-Events Centre of Excellence. He has advised numerous International sports bodies as well as private companies in the sports field. David has extensive experience in rights acquisition, commercialisation and planning in particular in connection with complex International sports events. David will bring a strategic point of view to the discussion with a presentation on commercialisation and exploitation of sports brands with an eye also on the impact of social media and specific case studies.

4:40 pm Open Forum Discussion – Ambush Marketing
The forum discussion will be preceded by a short presentation on examples of ambush marketing by Giovanni Visintini, Trade Mark and Copyright counsel at BP, who have notably sponsored the London 2012 Olympic Games. The audience will then be invited to comment and share experiences and opinions on the topic and Manuela Macchi will moderate the discussion.
5:15 pm Sports trade marks in action! – John Yapp (PGA)
John Yapp is Group Finance Director of The Professional Golfers’ Association Limited and is on the management board of the LLP that owns and stages the European side of the Ryder Cup. John is responsible for the PGA’s trade marks and will round up the session with a short speech covering anecdotes from the golf industry.
