Major UK based automotive OEMs commited to source more from UK component suppliers - MIA active in developing new business networks!

Already a list of components required in the short term has been issued...and a comprehensive supplier finder website created www.autosupplierfinder.com.

MIA members are encouraged to register at NO CHARGE on this influential website, without delay. The following message explains this exciting new concept and the MIA will keep members fully informed of developments.

The UK automotive component supply chain remains the key critical success factor, which will ensure we have a vibrant and prosperous British automotive industry, capable of competing on the world stage, attracting overseas investment, and able to offer the latest technologies as we move into the low carbon transportation era.

Commitment from the new coalition Government to the Automotive Council and it’s strategic vision to develop the industry is very positive. This will go a long way in making sure we have the very best chance of achieving a sustainable and successful UK automotive industry – an industry which is widely acknowledged as having a vital role to play in the transition to a more balanced economy.

Driven by a significant shift in market conditions, the UK is becoming an increasingly attractive place for global OEMs to do business, with a growing demand to source more components, locally.

In support of the Automotive Council, SMMT recently hosted an automotive components trade event in Birmingham designed to facilitate more local sourcing.

"We secured an initial indication from major OEMs of short term demand for the components shown on the list below, and participation of Aston Martin, BMW, Ford Europe, General Motors, Jaguar Land Rover, JCB, Leyland Trucks and Nissan. The event resulted in over 90 one-to-one meetings between OEMs and capable UK based suppliers."

"SMMT’s Automotive Supplier Finder service (www.autosupplierfinder.com) was used to find potential suppliers who were invited to attend, and one-to-one meetings arranged at the request of the OEMs.  Early results from the event are very positive, with many follow-up meetings to progress new partnership opportunities."

"This clearly demonstrates the appetite, from global OEMs to source locally in the UK, and an overwhelming willingness, from all parts of the industry, to work together to build a stronger and more resilient UK automotive supply chain.  There is still much to be done, following the success of this event, SMMT will work closely with the Automotive Council, to run similar events in the near future."

The above are extracts from a recent message from Paul Everitt, CEO  of the SMMT

Lawrence Davies, director of purchasing, General Motors UK commented, “..an excellent opportunity to meet many potential new suppliers all on the same day. We will be following up with a number of businesses we met to progress potential opportunities further.”

Andy Wareing, general manager, Nissan Purchasing, “Good initiative, very beneficial to both the OEMs and wider supplier base – we’ve already invited several suppliers back to discuss the potential of doing business together”.

Ian Young, managing director, Stokes Forgings said, "It's not often that you get the chance to meet so many senior purchasing people from the automotive industry under the same roof. Not only did we meet new customer contacts, but we left with the opportunity to quote for some new packages of business that ideally suit our production facilities"
