The MIA Motorsport to Automotive Initiative

Partners

The UK’s automotive industry supports nearly half a million jobs and annually exports goods worth £8.9bn and represents a great opportunity for motorsport and high performance engineering firms.  Other sectors of the UK economy including; Defence, Aerospace and Marine, have already reaped the benefits of the ‘can-do’, rapid response culture of the UK motorsport industry.

Automotive OEMs have identified a need for the motorsport sector’s R&D capabilities and fast delivery expertise.  The MIA’s Motorsport to Automotive Initiative (M2Auto) will facilitate and create a closer dialogue with the automotive sector through a series of events and activities.

The automotive industry currently faces huge challenges, largely driven by the CO2 agenda, and with the rate of technology change faster than it has been for many decades, it’s a fantastic time to be an engineer:

“The mainstream automotive industry is hungry for new ideas, for innovation and for new technology and if the motorsport industry can provide some of those ideas, then it will undoubtedly benefit”
- Richard Parry-Jones CBE , Joint Chair of the Automotive Council

Now is the time to for motorsport companies to pro-actively engage with the Automotive Council, OEM’s and the Technology Strategy Board to help deliver their low-carbon plans. Keen to act on this, Williams F1 and Jaguar have announced they will collaborate for the first time to produce one of the world’s highest performance and environmentally sustainable supercars.

A direct technology transfer between elite motorsport and road-going production cars is key to the C-X75’s success.  The supercar’s chassis will be made of Carbon-fibre to create an incredibly lightweight, yet rigidly strong structure.

The inaugural event of the M2Auto calendar was an ‘Exhibition of High Performance Engineering Capability’ by MIA members inside the Jaguar Land Rover Whitley Plant in Coventry with other events in the pipeline, please see below for events diary.

“What better way to kick-start the Motorsport to Automotive initiative, than hold the first event right at the technological heart of Jaguar Land Rover. Interest in our low-friction, high load gear and engine oils was overwhelming, which shows the potential for such energy-saving products in ecologically aware times. Drawbacks? None – except I’m now busier than ever!”
- Nevil Hall, Joint Managing Director, Millers Oils
