SMMT Report - UK automotive plants seek home-grown supply chain

The independent report by research group AutoAnalysis, commissioned by SMMT, reveals encouraging prospects for the UK automotive supply chain with the majority of volume car manufacturers with UK plants showing a strong interest in sourcing more locally-built components. The report noted the increased opportunities arising from a shift to a low carbon economy and suggested that component manufacturers prepare now for the requirements of future model production

The report cited a tactical shift to benefit from a favourable exchange rate; the minimisation of the vulnerabilities and logistical costs associated with an extended supply chain; the UK’s labour flexibility and positive industrial relations; and the sourcing of new technologies for ultra-low carbon vehicles as reasons for the strong interest in sourcing more locally built components.
