The Technology Strategy Board is currently considering a number of Technology & Innovation Centres (TICs) which aim at accelerating the commercialisation of research to drive economic growth. Potentially one of these could be dedicated to Space Technologies and Applications. Space Applications cover a very diverse range of technologies and user groups across the entire spectrum of electronics and IT, utilising sensors, telecommunications, position and time, autonomous operations and so forth, to deliver benefits in application areas ranging from integrated transport systems to carbon trading and natural resource management to mobile gaming.
Many of these applications areas are very down to earth and might not be seen as "space" such as train passenger information systems or mobile gaming. Likewise the companies that work in these spheres may not see themselves as "space companies". However, many end user applications are enabled or enhanced through the use of space based infrastructure and the information that is generated as a result; just as the internet is now an assumed capability then so to are data generated by satellites.
Over coming years the availability and quality of such data is going to improve dramatically as Space programmes such as Galileo and GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security) are completed. Galileo will be Europe’s own global navigation satellite system, providing a highly accurate, guaranteed global positioning service under civilian control. A user will be able to take a position with the same receiver to deliver real-time positioning accuracy down to the metre range. GMES is the European Programme for the establishment of a 24/7 capacity for Earth Observation. Utilisation of this data in products and services will generate significant wealth to the companies with the creativity to develop such applications.
This questionnaire aims collect information on how your organisation might benefit from, or contribute to the space TIC. In particular to consider how existing or future space infrastructure might lead to new applications that your organisation could exploit.
To gather the best insights the following things have been done:
• Your name and organisation will remain CONFIDENTIAL and only used so that we can collect names for a prize draw.
• Inputs are text based, but it means that the survey will be richer in output
• A summary report will be generated and published by the Space SIG.
The survey will close on 6th September 2011. To complete the survey please follow the link below:
