The Technology Strategy Board (TSB) and Ricardo UK have launched a study into the capability of UK automotive, giving government and businesses a detailed view of the current state of the industry and its ability to take advantage of the transition to low carbon technologies.
The report, “Automotive technologies: The UK’s current capability”, was commissioned by TSB at the request of the New Automotive Innovation and Growth Team, the precursor to the Automotive Council, has revealed for the first time the areas of the automotive industry where the UK thrives, and where capability could be developed. Conducted by Ricardo UK, the study looks in detail at each technology area within the auto industry, measuring the UK’s capability
Designed to be used as a basis by which business can make future decisions about the development of the auto industry, it is envisaged that the report will help the UK to take advantage of the market opportunities that the development of low carbon vehicles brings.
On the launch, SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt said, “This report demonstrates that the UK motor industry is well set to exploit the transition to ultra low carbon vehicles. UK automotive manufacturing industry directly employs over 150,000 people and is the world’s second largest premium car producer and a leading engine producer. As the global motor industry continues to endure difficult times, the report is of particular importance regarding areas of that could benefit from improvement and the future direction of the low carbon vehicle sector.
