The Future of Automotive Safety - Regulation, Collaboration and Development - 25 November 2009

Despite the recent changes within the automotive industry, safety continues to be a major area of development, research and regulation within Europe. Each year, over 40,000 lives are lost to road accidents in Europe alone. Progress is being made – in Germany, there were 21,000 fatal road accidents in 1970 compared with only 4,500 in 2008 – even with more cars on the road. The implementation of advanced passive and active safety systems, including pedestrian protection, adaptive headlights, ESC and emergency braking systems as well as increased mandatory standards from the European Commission and EURO NCAP testing, continue to help mitigate the consequences of these road accidents. While these improvements have helped reduce accident rates, the need to save more lives on roadways around the world remains prominent. It is critical for governments and automotive industry stakeholders to have a collaborative approach to automotive safety in order to maintain the advancement of safety systems innovation, industry competition and standardisation in the effort to save more lives on Europe’s roadways.

This conference offers a timely opportunity to capture essential industry information in order to gain an understanding of advances within safety policy formation, safety systems development and regulatory collaboration within the European automotive industry. Participants will explore government regulation, initiatives from the European Commission and current advances that are being made in active, passive and pedestrian safety systems. In addition, this event will provide a high-level forum for industry stakeholders, including OEMs, policy makers, engineers and analysts from around the world to network, exchange ideas, and consider the challenges that need to be faced in order to optimize the future of automotive safety.
