"We frequently hear racing drivers talking about set-up. But what does this phrase mean in reality? More importantly, if you’re training to become a race engineer, how do you apply what you read in a textbook to the pit lane?
The Motorsport Industry Association has attempted to provide the answer by establishing the MIA School of Race Engineering.
It offered a four-day course of intensive tuition from two respected and experienced race engineers.
The course fills in the crucial link between theory and practice and, at last month’s Autosport International Show, the MIA held a taster course to show interested people what the longer course involves. Motorsport News sat in to hear what it was all about.
The engineers who lead the course are Dan Walmsley of the Strakka Racing World Endurance Championship team and Jay Davenport of the new Arden World Series by Renault team. Together they provided an insightful and clear description of how they set up their racing cars. They discussed tyres, chassis stiffness, weight distribution, aerodynamics and numerous other aspects that combine to give the car its overall set-up."
