Zircotec Exhaust Coating cools Aston Martin V12 Zagatos at arduous Nürburgring 24 Hours

Formula One ceramic based coatings used on exhaust manifolds ensure lower underbonnet and cockpit temperatures for new Aston Martin.

Advanced ceramic technology played its part in ensuring that Aston Martin’s latest V12 Zagato endurance racing car was able to stay cool at the epic Nürburgring 24 Hours. The coating, derived from Zircotec’s ThermoHold° based ceramic, was selected by Aston Martin as a highly effective, durable yet lightweight method of reducing underbonnet temperatures at the 25km Nordschleife track.

The use of Zircotec’s advanced coatings on the new Aston Martin reflects the growing use of such coatings to manage heat both on the road and track. With its origins in the nuclear industry, Zircotec’s ThermoHold® technology is applied to the exhaust system by plasma spraying to prevent heat being radiated by the 6.0 litre V12 engine. The resultant lower underbonnet temperatures improve reliability and prevent heat damage to bodywork, fuel and electrical systems. Keeping heat inside the exhaust also lowers cockpit temperatures, improving driver comfort and safety. The advantages it offers, relevant to all performance and classic cars, mean a growing number of classic Aston Martin owners are also benefitting from using the Zircotec coating, which is now available from Aston Martin’s Works Service department.

“Zircotec’s coatings are an attractive alternative for classic and performance car owners looking to enhance durability, performance and comfort,” says Peter Whyman, sales director at Zircotec. “In addition, the textured finish and range of colours ensure it is aesthetically more appealing than legacy technologies such as wrap. And unlike wrap, it is fit and forget too, meaning no maintenance is required for a 24 Hour race and years to come after.”

The improved reliability and lower cockpit temperatures made the selection of the coating compelling for Aston Martin for the 24 hour event held on the 25km Nordschleife track. “Driver comfort is crucial at long distance events such as these,” adds Whyman. “The significant speed differences, long lap and often challenging weather conditions at the Nürburgring means anything that helps to improve the environment and their focus is a worthwhile addition to the specification.”
