Urgent Operational Requirements (UORs)

The MIA has found that the area of the MoD most receptive and applicable to motorsport design skills and know-how is that of UORs - rapid resolution of vehicle design problems identified by soldiers in the field. UORs are generally upgrades to current vehicles, for instance improving power and/or reducing the weight of a vehicle that has burgeoned in weight since its original design. Alternatively, other UORs are British Forces-specified modifications to newly produced, overseas-sourced, standard vehicles.

The procurement activities for UORs and other vehicles are organised through the prime contractor - companies such as BAE, Thales and Supacat - who act as the design authority for the vehicles they support. An MoD Integrated Project Team (IPT) may request or specify changes/upgrades to these vehicles, but it is the responsibility of the private sector contractor to source the technology which delivers this upgraded capability.

The key UORs is solving problems quickly and getting the solutions right first time - one of the motorsport abilities which the MoD appears to value most. These contracts may sometimes be small and short-term, but UOR components may eventually find their way onto standard vehicles - so using UORs as a means by which to get your business' 'foot in the door' can serve as a seal of approval which might lead onto further defence opportunities.

Partners of the Motorsport to Defence Initiative are Alcon, a leading supplier of brake and clutch components to motorsport and OEM applications and Xtrac, the world's leading manufacturer of motorsport transmissions and drive trains.
