MIA Members have been invited by the Science & Technology Facilities Council to visit the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) at the International Space Innovation Centre (ISIC) – this is your chance to visit their first-class and globally recognised facilities, exploring reciprocal collaborative opportunities.

Launched in March 2010 by Lord Mandelson and Lord Drayson, the ISIC is sited with the European Space Agency. This is at the heart of Government plans to support Britain’s growing space sector which supports 68,000 jobs in the UK directly and indirectly and contributes £6bn to the economy.

As part of this unique invitation to explore technology and developments in this sector members will visit the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) - one of the foremost laboratories of its kind, facilitating the advance research of over 10,000 scientists and engineers annually.


  • 16.00              Arrival at R75 main reception 
                          Networking and refreshments in the Central Exhibition Area and opportunity to 
                          explore the ‘hands on’ zone
  • 16.15              Welcome - Science & Technology Facilities Council (STFC)
                          MIA Business update – Chris Aylett, MIA CEO
  • 16.30              Tour of facility - Members can choose from one of the following;

                          RAL Space - world-class space research and technology development and 
                          significant involvement in over 200 space missions.
                          ISIS - world leading centre for research in the physical and life sciences
                          Diamond - UK’s national synchrotron facility
                          Technology - provides advanced technology and engineering in support of both 
                          STFC funded activities and other high profile international projects.
